An alleged student at a middle school in northern California was suspended from school for three days for allegedly making inappropriate comments on his Facebook page, officials said Tuesday.
The alleged student, a 20-year-old male, is accused of posting a series of inappropriate and offensive messages to his own account in March and April.
The district said it had begun an investigation, which included looking into the student’s Facebook account, and that the matter was being handled as a matter of “professional misconduct.”
The student is currently on administrative leave.
The investigation comes just days after the district’s superintendent told a group of teachers and principals that the school was not doing enough to prevent the spread of racist and sexist comments on Facebook.
The California Teachers Association, which represents district employees, also said in a statement that “a large number of students have been suspended from our schools for posting offensive material on social networking sites, including Facebook.”
